Definitions of the 10 Fall Words that Start with “E”
To begin with, help the child understand the meanings of the autumn words by reading aloud the definitions. Each definition was pulled from Dictionary.com.
- Embrace- to take or clasp in the arms; to take or receive gladly or eagerly. When I think of “embrace” as one of the fall-related words, I think about letting go of the summer bustle, the heat, and the greenery. As a result, we are able to embrace all the beauty that Fall brings, the harvest, and the time together as a family.
- Enchant- to subject to magical influence; bewitch. Because Fall is associated with Halloween, “enchanting” is one of the best halloween words to describe Fall. Halloween is an enchanting time for kids, so this word is at the top of the list!
- Eerie- uncanny, so as to inspire superstitious fear; weird. A quick second to “enchanting,” “eerie” is also at the top of the list of Halloween words for Fall. This is a time of ghosts, goblins, and zombies roaming the sidewalks. Of course it’s eerie! This is one of the best spooky words for the spookiest season.
- Ember- a small live piece of coal, wood, etc., as in a dying fire. There is nothing like sitting around a warm fire on cold nights. It’s the perfect time of year to sit on a bale of hay and gather around the glowing embers with friends.
- Earthy- of the nature of or consisting of earth or soil. It’s the season of harvest, and the soil is being tended to once the crops come out. Further, visiting apple orchards, a corn maze, pumpkin patches, and enjoying the beauty of the season are all earthy activities!
- Equinox- the time when the sun crosses the plane of the earth’s equator, making night and day of approximately equal length all over the earth. Such an interesting word! The autumnal equinox is the first official day of Fall. So, of course “equinox” is the perfect word for the new season. Happy Fall!
- Explore- to traverse or range over (a region, area, etc.) for the purpose of discovery. As the fall weather cools off, we are eager to get out in the mild temperatures and explore more! Whether it be field trips to local farms, sporting events, or just the park, Fall is the perfect time for exploration.
- Evergreen- having green leaves throughout the entire year, the leaves of the past season not being shed until after the new foliage has been completely formed. One of the most obvious descriptive words for Fall is “color.” We often think about the changing leaves and the beautiful Fall colors. But, it’s also a great time to notice the evergreen around you, too! As plants and grass and trees begin to turn brown, the evergreen gives us a glimpse of life and color. Searching for the perfect pine cone is one of my favorite fall activities!
- Exhale- to emit breath or vapor; breathe out. Don’t you just love the fresh autumn air?! There’s nothing quite like it. Take a big, deep breath of that fresh air. Then, exhale slowly and take a moment to reflect on the beauty surrounding you!
- Election- the selection of a person or persons for office by vote. It’s that time of year. It’s election day! So, let’s take a vote. Which of these Fall words is your favorite?!
