Why is it important for children to memorize Bible verses?
The word of God is the most important thing to commit to memory, and unfortunately, one of the last things we think to teach our children. Of course, we all had those poems, math facts, grammar rules, and historical dates we had to commit to memory during our school years. But, we often let scripture verse slip to the bottom of priorities when it comes to memorization.
So, why should scripture actually be one of the first things we have our kids memorize?
While rules for reading, math, writing, spelling, and government are all important to learn and follow, the rule for life and getting into Heaven is by far the most crucial teaching we will ever do for our children.
If they never hear scripture or memorize God’s word, how will they know to live it out in their daily lives? And, how will they know what to share with others when the time comes for ministry?
As a parent, one of the most valuable gifts I can ever give my children is the gift of knowing God and knowing Bible truths. It is the key to getting through the toughest times in their lives, for defending the defenseless, standing up to injustice, and being an example of God’s love for others.
Learning God’s word together is a great way to open the lines of communication between you and your child. And, it gives them some of the best weapons to use against the lies this Earth will present to them throughout their lives.
What are some easy Bible verses for kids?
There are many favorite verses that we often hear repeated over and over again. And, these can be a great place to start with younger children. Because they are likely to hear them again in church, in books, in songs, and in your teaching, they will be exposed to these beautiful verses enough times to help commit to memory naturally. Some of these verses may include:
1 John 4:8 – God is love.
Luke 6:37 – Forgive and you will be forgiven.
2 Corinthians 9:7 – God loves a cheerful giver.
Luke 6:31 – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Romans 8:31 – If God is for us, who can be against us?
Psalm 136:1 – Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.
Psalm 23:1 – The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
Joshua 1:9 – Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

How do you teach a child to memorize verses?
The perfect way to teach a child to memorize anything is through repetition, relevance, and application.
Repetition is the repeating of a verse over and over until you are able to say it without reading it. It is committed to heart and you can quote it word for word without having to look it up.
Relevance is how you are connected to the verse you are trying to memorize. If a child can make a connection between a slew of words and their own life, they are more likely to be impacted by the words of the verse and remember them.
Application is the act of putting these verses to use. How can we put words to use? We can do this by living the scripture out in our daily lives. But, also by writing them down, tracing, or highlighting.
And, you guessed it, by coloring them!
That’s why I love these scripture coloring pages. Your child gets the opportunity to write the verse, read it aloud, and color it. Giving your child these chances for repetition and application will go a long way in helping them memorize scripture.
How to teach preschoolers Bible verses
Preschoolers love reading books and singing songs with you! It’s the best way they learn, and it’s often the most used tools we use as we teach them.
There are many great children’s Bible books out there, but many of them don’t quote scripture word for word. While these books are great for teaching your child a Bible lesson, be sure to choose books that use the exact words from the Bible to teach scripture. The more a child is exposed to these words, the more they will know and understand them.
A great strategy to commit something to memory is through song. Preschoolers are more likely to remember words if they are connected to a familiar tune. It is also easy to sing these songs over and over throughout the day, which allows for repetition in a fun way. You can also tap into your child’s creativity by using tools, such as printable coloring pages, to help them make the connection.
A great video series for younger children is Hillsong Kids on Youtube. They have many Bible verse videos you can play for your preschooler and learn the songs together!
How to teach Bible verses to middle school kids
If you have older, middle school aged kids, they may not be as interested in the kids songs about Bible verses. Instead, you may have greater success at memorizing the verses by having them use scripture cards.
Much like the flashcards we used to study for tests in school, scripture cards are simple index cards with verses written out on them. Your child can read through the verse several times and practice saying it aloud without looking at the card. Not only will writing out the verses help to memorize them, but also reading through them several times a day will also be effective. This is also a great idea for independent work your child can do throughout the day.
To make your own scripture cards follow these steps:
- Grab some index cards.
- On one side of the card, write out the book of the Bible, the chapter, and the verse where the scripture can be found.
- On the flip side of the card, write out the verse word for word, copied directly from the Bible.
- Practice reading the scripture side of the card, flipping it over and reading the book, chapter, and verse.
- Once your child starts to commit some of these to memory, you can use the flashcards to quiz them. Hold up the side that has the book, chapter, and verse information and have your child recite the scripture to you from memory.
